Synopsis
John Bayley works with D&T NQT, Ben Nelson, as he gets to grips with teaching a Year 8 class at Brockworth Enterprise School in Gloucestershire.
It's the end of June, and Bayley drops in on Ben's isometric drawing lesson. They agree that many students simply haven't understood the class.
Bayley feels Ben needs to be better organised in the classroom, and use more praise as a motivational tool.
At the end of September, Bayley makes a return visit, to a lesson from a module on money boxes. Ben's class management has improved, but he is relying too much on the school's new disciplinary code, without setting the groundwork with positive reinforcement.
John takes Ben to observe the school's headteacher, Paul Elliot, giving a masterclass in making Year 7 feel special, guided by his abiding principle of finding something to like in each and every one of his pupils.

Behaviour management
Brilliant advice. This is the way to have a super time in the classroom. Hard to take on as it undermines confidence as the teacher is given responsibility for behaviour and things going wrong is therefore the teacher's fault! I think that this can be difficult to accept and I would appreciate a more sensitive appraoch to teaching the teacher. The NQT did not find it easy and could take a long time to improve his ways. I am not sure he quite believed in the technique. Try it! Once you see how well it works, there will be no looking back!

Well Done to both John and Ben. I have made and am continuing to make the same mistakes as Ben. Like Ben I'm improving but thanks to Ben's courage I've had a chance to learn from some of his experiences. Thanks to John too. A great communicator, I'll try to remmember your advice.

I love this episode because it so clearly shows the difference when positive reinforcement is used. I like it when John refers to it as political work to get the students on your side. I hope more episodes like this are made in the future.

Good work John and Ben.Positive reinforcements can radically change the way a student may look at a subject.Still I share the same notion as that of Aspell.Positive reinforcement applies for all.When we aim to build up confidence in kids through positive feedback,the same should apply to the teacher also whose confidence should also be nurtured in the same manner.

Thank you Ben and John for not hesitating to show us how to deal with teaching when being a NQT. The same topics are in the centre of discussion in Germany. But: Even FQTs (Formely Qualified Teachers)often face similar problems, don't they. Don't we all?
Favorite Episode
This is my favorite episode. I wish that more time was taken with the teacher at the end of the episode, perhaps a longer interview. And it would have been great to see a follow up after Ben's meeting at the end. Even though it was a long episode, I wanted it to be longer! When is John making more episodes???

I think that there was a lot of profound advice given through out the program and especially in the last conversation between the two mentors and the NQT. Wow, I have a lot to take on board, brilliant.

I can't say I'm impressed with the title
I can't say I'm impressed with the title....If we "loathe 'em" we are definitely in the wrong job!
I try to avoid techniques or strategies.....I am just myself; who I am and what I stand for says more than any strategy or technique will ever achieve.
I look at pupils who have difficulty respecting others in the same way as I look at those who have difficulty understanding any subject - and that is, as needing help.
I am more than a teacher, just pouring out academic facts which must be remembered. I am facilitator of all learning.
A sham. Firstly, the pupils
A sham.
Firstly, the pupils in the second part of the video (the Headteacher's class) were far fewer in number than in the NQT's lesson. Secondly, they were not doing a practical lesson as such, so therefore classroom control issues are less serious. (Yes they were working on a chocolate bar label, but with pencils and paper, not tenon saws and wood.)Thirdly, there was no need for the pupils to move around the room as there was in the NQT's lesson, again, making classroom management easier. Fourthly, merely by virtue of being the Headteacher, his status would immediately mean he commanded more respect and so indiscipline would be far less likely.
I got the feeling that at the end the NQT seemed desperate to make these points, but understandably felt unable to. None of this is to detract from the basic message of the importance of positivity in the classroom, it would just have been better for the NQT to have seen this in the context of a similar lesson and class to his own.
